Match Report: Harlequins vs QUB

Match Report:

Belfast Harlequinns vs Queen’s University Belfast 18/01/12

On Wednesday Belfast Harlequinns were heavy favourites in a draw with the lower division side, things seemed to be going well for the hosts with most of the opening half spent in the students’ half, however a battling Queen’s defence saw the Quinns contained to 12-0 at half-time with newcomer Betsy Bissonette putting in some crucial hits. The students started off a surprising second half come-back with some swift handling and neat off-loading to send Lauren Arthur through a gap, the centre still had a lot to do but showed great pace,  grounding beneath the posts. Catherine Mallon added the extras to make the game 12-7. The next score came from commanding fly-half Cathy Craig following an impressive set of phases from the Queen’s forwards and tied the teams 12-12. With 10 minutes left to play the students struck again with winger Kirsty Wright showing a great turn of speed near the touchline to beat the defence. Queens showed some admirable defending in the final few minutes and looked like they may steal a precious victory; however some quick-thinking from a penalty allowed the hosts to break on the wing and go in at the corner. Quinns were unable to convert the kick leaving the game to finish 17-17. Overall it was an impressive result for the development team against one of the top teams in Division 2.
